Turbo Repair

A few weeks ago another pilot and the tower contacted me to tell me that my exhaust was smoking like an old Chevy. I changed oil and refilled the system thinking that I might have overfilled the engine and that some how that was causing the smoking. Wrong!!! Later I noticed that the wheel pants behind the exhaust pipe had more then soot. Finally after a few more fights, the oil started dripping from the exhaust pipe. As the saga goes, I finally pulled the turbo apart and to my surprise, not only was oil leaking, but something had impacted the impeller. I have dissembled the turbo and found a supplier for the turbo parts and will place an order. Here are some pictures of the impeller and the t wheel.

As the picture shows, the T wheel was already starting to coak from the oil. In a thread on the Net I stated that perhaps I had blown an oil seal, well it looks like the seals are of the same variety as piston ring seals, and are most likely leaking as a result of wear. The wear could be premature due to the earlier heating problems. The seal on the cold side has not leaked at all.
